Studies

With the implementation of the Bologna reform at the University of Basel, the range of courses offered has been switched to the three-level system Bachelor-Master-Promotion.

At the Faculty of Science, the Diploma in Biology has been replaced by the Bachelor and Master studies. The new degree programs are run with resources from the Biozentrum together with the Department of Environmental Sciences (Area Biology) and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. The reformed curriculum will address both the training needs of biological research and those of other areas of activity, such as for biology lessons.

At the Bachelor level (Bachelor of Science, BSc) three majors are offered:
Molecular Biology, Animal and Plant Sciences and Integrative Biology

Six possible Master programs (Master of Science, MSc) are available following the Bachelor program:
Animal Biology, Epidemiology, Infection Biology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Plant Science

At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and at the Faculty of Medicine, biology can be studied as an extra-faculty Bachelor degree subject or as an extra-faculty Master degree subject:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Biology (Minor) and a Bachelor degree subject of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Major)
  • Master of Arts (MA) in Biology (Minor) and a Master degree subject of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Major)
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Sports Science with biology as second degree subject
  • Master of Science (MSc) Sports Science with biology as second degree subject

Students earn credit points during their studies, the calculation of which is based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The number of credit points per lesson corresponds with the student workload required to achieve the learning goals. The benchmark for a credit point corresponds to a student workload of 30 hours.
